What’s so hard about making a decision?

I was watching a show on HGTV called Property Brothers. I am REALLY behind on TV, so this episode is a few months old. The wife of the couple looking for a new home admitted to the world that she has a hard time making a decision. It didn’t matter how big or small it was, she just had a hard time choosing. She said that she would make a decision on Monday, wake up on Tuesday and decide that it wasn’t the right decision. And then take several months or even a year to make a final decision!

Can you relate to her?

I have worked with several clients before who just could not make a decision. They got caught up in the never ending cycle of over-thinking and over-analyzing. Or they became paralyzed by fear of making the wrong decision.

If you’ve ever been through this, let me give you a 3 tips on how you can make a decision faster.

  1. Decide what you want. And ask yourself if the option(s) presented in front of you will give you what you want (or at least most of it).
  2. Quiet the voices in your head about all of the different possible outcome. Just ask yourself 2 questions. What is the worst possible outcome of this decision? Can you recover from it? If you can recover from it, go with your decision.
  3. Remember that doing something is better than doing nothing. Taking action in the direction of fulfilling a desire is forward movement – even if it is the wrong decision, it provides you with the wisdom and knowledge to make a different decision. Allowing yourself to become stagnate doesn’t produce any results. Neither does it give you the wisdom or knowledge you need to move forward.

Go over this 3 tips the next time you’re struggling with making a decision.

“In the end, you’ll only regret the chances you didn’t take and the decisions you didn’t make.”
